cement replacement in concrete, and it is considered that
there is only very scant research in the area of replacing
100% of the fine aggregate component of concrete with
glass or combining both levels of replacement. Some of the
work that has been reported indicates that the use of glass
aggregate improves the flow properties of fresh concrete so
that very high strengths can be obtained even without the use
of superplasticizers [5]. However, the work carried out to
date in this respect shows that this is not necessarily the
case.

Abstract—The large scale production of Portland cementand the acquisition of aggregates from dredging and quarryinghave a dramatic impact on the environment. Consequently extensive research is ongoing into the use of Portland cementreplacements, using many waste materials and industrial byproducts,for example, pulverised fuel ash (PFA) and groundgranulated blastfurnaceslag (GGBS). The continuing debaterelating to UK government policy on landfill tax dictates thatthe use of waste from other sources is high on the political andresearch agenda.
In addition to the use of binder replacement materials fromwaste, there is somewhat less regard given to the subject ofusing waste material to replace the fine aggregate content of
concrete
Glass from varying recycling processes is considered to be amaterial which could be used as binder and also as aggregatereplacement. Glass which is most considered for recycling in
terms of environmental protection is that from containers,architectural and end of life vehicle glass. This study outlinesthe use of such recycled glass as a binder and fine aggregate
replacement and details workability and strength developmentof concrete containing glass as partial replacement oftraditional materials.

II. EXPERIMENTATION
Chemical composition and soluble oxide content of bothmaterials was determined. A range of concrete mixes wasmanufactured incorporating processed crushed glass or glass powder or both. Test mixes were undertaken to establish the effect of the glass materials on the mix, during which time it quickly became apparent that the processed crushed glass had a marked detrimental effect upon the workability of the fresh concrete when used to replace 100% of the fine aggregate component of the mWixo (rFkaigbuilriety 3).
Further to establishing a mix design that produced an acceptable level of workability (determined at a w/b of 0.5) additional mixes were produced using various quantities of
the two replacement materials and comparisons made with the control mix (composed of PC : natural sand : limestone aggregate. The concrete was used to produce 50mm cubes
and 100mm cubes, which were watercured at 20ºC.Compressive strength was determined for curing periods of 7, 14, 28, 90 days. In addition, the larger cubes were cored and sliced to produce discs which are currently being used to determine values of sorptivity.
