VIVENDI’s first steps into China were around the beginning of the 1980s, through OTV-Krüger, a subsidiary specializing in water-related construction and engineering and Campenon Bernard SGE, European leader in construction.

Today, VIVENDI’s two key business Environment, Communications are significantly represented in China. In addition, VIVENDI proved its long-term commitment in China over the past two years and its great confidence in China’s development prospects by:

·donating mobile water-treatment plants to the "China Charity Federation" to help re-establish a proper water supply in the flooded area of Hubei Province in September 1998

·VIVENDI Chairman and CEO Jean-Marie Messier is an old friend of China and makes his full commitment to China : chairing the 1st EU China Business Dialogue in October 1998, aimed at "increasing mutual understanding and co-operation between Chinese and EU companies as well as identifying priorities for policy-makers". Besides, J.M. Messier was appointed in 1999 as Member of the Beijing Advisory Board of the Mayor of Beijing.

VIVENDI Environment

·Water- The First concession contract to operate & renovate a 500,000 m3 /day plant in TIANJIN. Générale des Eaux has played a pioneering role in drawing up contracts in the water sector in China. With its capability in all water activities, Générale des Eaux occupies the front rank of competitors, enabling the company to expand rapidly throughout the country. The first concession contract to operate and renovate the Tianjin’s drinking water plant was won in June 1997. The plant (500,000m3/day) serves 4 million inhabitants. Total investment: US$30m, 20 year-period contract.

China’s first BOT contract in the water sector. In addition, in July 1998, Générale des Eaux together with Japanese partner Marubeni, won China’s first BOT contract in the water sector in Chengdu (3,2m inhabitants). Générale des Eaux and three subsidiaries (OTV, Sade and Campenon Bernard SGE) will design and build the new drinking water treatment plant with a minimum capacity of a 400,000m3/day. Total investment: US$110m, 18 year-period contract.
